Pair of Sandburg Trustees Presented With Awards From ICCTA

Carl Sandburg College trustees Tom Colclasure and Gayla Pacheco were presented with awards from the Illinois Community College Trustees Association during the Board’s regular monthly meeting Thursday in recognition of their service to the College.
ICCTA President John Looney and Director of Communications Kim Villanueva presented Colclasure with the Trustee Service Award in honor of his 35 years on the Board. Colclasure, who was one of 44 trustees statewide first elected in 1985, is one of just two from that group still serving. He is also the only member from that class who has served without interruption.
Colclasure is among six current trustees in Illinois who have served on their college’s Board for at least 35 years. During his time as a trustee, Colclasure has chaired the ICCTA’s West Central Region and served on its Nominating Committee.
“I really appreciate being a part of this Board and all the things Carl Sandburg College is doing,” said Colclasure, currently in his sixth six-year term. “I keep running for re-election because we're doing such amazing things, and I’m happy to be part of it and look forward to seeing the successful things we'll do in the future.”
Looney and Villanueva also presented Pacheco with the Trustee Education Award, which is given to trustees for completing 15 ICCTA seminars during their tenure. The award was first created in 1992 to recognize outstanding achievement in professional development among trustees.
“I'm very honored. All I can say is that being a trustee is just a wonderful way to give back,” said Pacheco, who has been a member of the Board since 2009. “Thousands of people say, ‘If it wasn't for Carl Sandburg College, I don't know what I'd be doing.’ So being a trustee is incredibly important to me.”
The Board adopted the final tax year 2020 levies, which were based upon a projected tax base of $2,036,833,004 and would represent an increase of $59,325,233 (3.00 percent) over the EAV for tax year 2019. The effect of growth in the tax base (EAV) means a projected district-wide increase in the total operating levy of $292,102 (3.09 percent).
The Board also approved the acceptance of a grant worth $81,250 from the Illinois Green Economy Network. The funds will be used to support the completion of a vestibule replacement project on the Main Campus in Galesburg.
In other business, the Board approved the following:
- Employment of Michelle Erickson as coordinator of veterans and military service/financial aid manager, effective Dec. 1.
- Resignation of Misty Lyon as associate vice president of academic and student planning, effective Dec. 31.
The Board’s next scheduled meeting is 7 p.m. Dec. 19 on the Main Campus in Galesburg.
